Journalism

SCAN at Lancaster SU's Student media awards, 2019

During my time at Lancaster University, I was the Editor of SCAN: Student Comment and News. In this role, I managed a team of 18 Section Editors and over 70 writers and liaised with Lancaster University Students’ Union to coordinate events and training. Additionally, I collated and proof-read a 4- page print paper every three weeks, using InDesign and WordPress.

You can read my portfolio of over 100 articles on the website I helped redesign, but I’ve picked a few of my favourites to showcase here.
A curriculum of white men isn’t enough
This article  was one of the first I wrote for SCAN as the Deputy Arts and Culture Editor in 2017.
In particular, this piece was crucial in sparking my enthusiasm for journalism, as the article instigated tangible change with the Department of English Literature and Creative Writing attaining the Bronze Athena Swan award for gender equality less than two years later. This article was cited as a part of that application.
Multiple Officer Resignations Follow Dismissal of SU President, George Nuttall
This piece is an example of real-time news journalism I produced during my time at SCAN, reporting live on a series of dismissals and resignations at the Students’ Union. With a significant reach of over 14,000 views, this article demonstrates the impact of well- structured journalism.
The #MeToo Movement is Trapped Within Gendered Language
I wrote this article following some academic research into feminist literature and social media. In this piece, I aim to turn that academic research into a readable tone allowing the topic to become approachable to the audience.
